ARCTIC SUMMER
Bunnell Street Gallery
Homer, Alaska
October 7 - November 2, 2005
Since moving to northern British Columbia over a decade ago, I have made a number of painting trips to the Arctic regions of northern Canada and Alaska. I am drawn to the austere landforms of the Arctic and the unique quality of the light that typifies the region. In the summer months, twilight lasts for hours and the atmospheric light effects can linger for a long time. This is an ideal environment for an artist who has spent the vast majority of his career studying... and painting... the light effects which define the North.
The show "Arctic Summer" at the Bunnell Street gallery show in Homer, Alaska in October of 2005 featured paintings and collages from two regions in the Arctic. Images were gathered from the Firth River on the Canadian side and the Jago River in the Arctic Refuge in Alaska. The paintings and collages featured in this exhibition were undertaken over a six month period in an attempt to understand how best to interpret the fragile and elusive light of the Arctic landscape.

The Bunnell Street show on the Arctic is part of a larger project I have been working on for about 5 years. That exploration is an attempt to compare and the contrast the design elements of the landforms of the Arctic with those of the deserts of the US Southwest and northern Mexico.
I was raised in the Mojave desert in southern California and my first impressions of the natural world were defined by the austere and mysterious beauty of that region. The "deserts" of the North are very similar in mood and personality to those in the Southwest and they immediately struck a chord with me upon my first trip to the Arctic in my early 20's.
The "Arctic Summer" show at the Bunnell Street Gallery is the first exploration of the contrasting dynamic between these two very different... yet similar... landscapes.
